Oh boy, I’m so game for Shingeki no Kyojin again!
We get a full episode of fighting off titans and amazing what I like to call “Spider-Man action” as well as an astonishing revelation.
Conny speaks of his weird gut feeling that the titan lying on his house reminded him of his mother. Ymir laughs at his crazy thought but in a crazily exaggerated manner, which triggered a suspicion in me. This suspicion was confirmed when Reiner talks to Ymir privately as she apparently can read an ancient language. The pacing of this season is at a very high level as we get more or less mindblowing revelations without much delay and everything still feels connected and like it makes sense.
Before Reiner can put two and two together and confront her, they are alarmed about the incoming titans. Captains Nanabe and Gelgar lead a very respectable fight against the first wave of titans. Inside, Reiner, Ymir, Conny and Christa manage to fight off one titan due to Reiner’s will to survive and his refusal to have his arm bitten off. As Christa tends to his wounds, she even tears her scarf apart to have a cloth as bandage. Reiner’s wish to marry her was an unsuspected moment of levity that lightens the grim and bleak atmosphere. I’m usually not a fan of the show’s attempts at comedy, which primarily feature Hange or Sasha, but this was small enough to not turn the whole situation into ridicule. However, I didn’t like Gelgar craving for a drink, which was a tonal antithesis to the desperate fight for their lives.
Unfortunately, there is a second, even bigger wave that the Beast Titan commands to attack the tower. After the captains run out of blades and gas and consequently fall in the battle, Ymir, very eager to protect Christa, jumps off the tower and freaking transforms into a titan in a crazy explosion (or is she maybe something different? I don’t recall the same visual effect for Eren’s transformation…). Man, am I pumped for the next episode.
